Book reading/ culture awareness building program designed to bring the audience up close and personal with the foods, music and traditions of the Indian subcontinent through a telling of Aneel and Dada-ji’s tale. Students will participate in a variety of fun hands-on experiences such as: roti making and sari wrapping. The author will share her journey as a writer and address her personal history and her writing process. The session will be followed by a question/answer period.
Target audience: Grades K-4
Duration: 1 hour
This presentation combines slide presentation, demonstrations/artifacts and excerpt reading to introduce the customs and traditions of Aliya’s family, a Muslim/American family with roots in the Indian subcontinent. The audience will learn about Aliya’s festive foods and about the workings of a joint family. Among other things, they will learn to tie the hijab and will have the opportunity to ask questions about it.
Target audience: Grades 5-8.
